Actors and participants

ID Multimedia Production (MMP) operates the ETH Zurich video portal as a service provider for lecture recordings and video distribution. MMP uses this video policy to inform owners of video material about its handling in the video portal and the associated video management system. It is implemented internally and technically as a life cycle/retention policy. This foresees three stages:

  1. Publication (open or access-restricted)
  2. Storage (no publication)
  3. Archive (no publication)

The owners of video material are

  • Author, through the recording of voice and/or image or the independent production of a video (e.g. lecture recordings)
  • Client for the production/provision of a video (e.g. event recordings)
  • Provider by uploading a video

Lecture recordings

  • Are unpublished three years after publication at the end of the then current semester (example: records for HS 2024 are depublished at the end of 2027); they are available to students for the standard duration of their Bachelor's or Master's studies.
  • Stored for a further two years and then archived.

Events (conference and lecture recordings)

  • Will be unpublished ten years after publication unless they are institutional or historical videos.
  • Stored for a further five years and then archived.

Institutional and historical videos

  • Are published without a time limit.

Provision by members of ETH

  • Institutional videos are published without a time limit, personal videos are deleted by the owner or MMP when leaving ETH.

Implementation, participation

The implementation of the video policy is the responsibility of MMP. Prior notification is mandatory when deleting videos, including the option for the owner to save the videos locally.

Exceptions, extension, contact

Owners of video material can request an extension of publication, storage or archiving, also in the sense of reuse, by sending an email to multimedia@id.ethz.ch; MMP will decide on the request.
