Welcome to ETH Zurich

You have received an ETH username and an initial password. Using these credentials, you will go through the IT onboarding process, which is required in order to gain access to ETH’s IT services.



The onboarding process includes the following steps:

  1. Entering your contact details
  2. Setting your ETH network password
  3. Setting your ETH password
  4. Registering for multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Please complete all steps thoroughly to avoid any interruptions to your access. If your access becomes blocked, please contact the ITS Service Desk for assistance.


warning Important Information Before You Begin

  • To register for MFA, you will need an authenticator app (e.g. Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator) installed on your smartphone.
  • If you encounter technical issues: Fully close your browser, use a private/incognito window, or clear your browser cache to remove outdated data.


Step-by-Step: IT Onboarding at ETH Zurich


  1. Go to the website: https://www.password.ethz.ch/
  2. Log in using your ETH username and the initial password you received.

  3. Enter Contact Information: Provide your private mobile phone number and/or personal email address. These are required for password and MFA reset procedures.

  4. Set Your ETH network password: Create a separate password for network services, which you will need to access services such as WLAN (eduroam) and VPN.


  5. Set Your ETH Password: Create your personal ETH password. This is used to log into the central IT services at ETH Zurich.


  6. Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):

    1. Click on “Automatic OTP Registration”.

    2. Scan the displayed QR code using your authenticator app (e.g. Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator). If completing the process on your smartphone only, copy the displayed key manually and paste it into the app.

    3. Enter the current 6-digit code shown in the app. Note: The code changes every 30 seconds. Please ensure you enter it promptly.

    4. Complete the setup by signing out and closing your browser.


You’ve Successfully Completed the IT Onboarding Process. You now have full access to all ETH Zurich IT services.
