Welcome back to ETH Zurich!

If you already had an ETH user account in the past, you will receive the same ETH user name again. If you have already gone through the ETH onboarding process, you can follow the steps below.

If you have not yet gone through the onboarding process, you are missing the personal contact details required for the reset functionality in the steps listed below. In this case, please send an e-mail with the following personal contact details to the ID Service Desk.

warning Please note before you start

  • To reset your ETH password, you need the MFA of the ETH (six-digit OTP code from the Authenticator app). ( step 6)
  • If you receive an error message, please close your browser or use a private/incognito window.



Instructions: Reset ETH password after re-entry


  1. Go to the website: https://www.password.ethz.ch
  2. Click on “Forgot password?” (without entering your ETH user name and password).

  3. Enter your ETH user name in the following window and click on the “Forgot password” field.

  4. Now select an option for the reset (via e-mail or cell phone) and confirm by clicking on “Reset password”.


  5. You will receive an e-mail or SMS with a new initial password.
  6. warning CAUTION:
    For the next step, you will need the MFA of the ETH (six-digit OTP code from the Authenticator app).
    If you still have this code, please continue with step 7.
    If not, you will need to perform the MFA registration or reset the MFA.

  7. Go to the website: https://www.password.ethz.ch/
  8. Log in with your ETH user name and initial password.

  9. Go to the “Self Service” tab and select “Change password”.

  10. Set a new ETH password.
    Leave both boxes checked (Active Directory, LDAPS).


  11. Set an ETH network password.
    To do this, tick the "Radius" checkbox and enter the password of your choice.
    You will need this later to access the WLAN.

Great, you've done it! You are now ready to use all other IT services at ETH.
