Print Service credits, pricing and refund
At the beginning of each semester, ETH students receive CHF 18.- for this service on the ETH Print service "Free Pages" account (auditors do not receive this credit).
The costs for the printed pages are debited from this account during the course of the semester; if the credit amount is used up, the user will no longer be able to trigger any further print jobs.
In order to be able to continue printing used up credit, it is possible to top up your printer account via IT Shop (https://itshop.ethz.ch) using Print Service Prepay.
You will find here an example of how to increase your printer account balance: How to increase your printer account balance
A black/white page costs CHF 0.02; a coloured page costs CHF 0.07. Duplex printouts receive a discount of one centime.
Via https://www.print.ethz.ch/ you have the possibility to review all of your print jobs or, if needed for some reason, request a refund for the job in question.
If your refund is rejected, but you would still like clarification, please forward the e-mail that you received to the Service Desk.
The system calculates how much each print job will cost, and this amount is then booked as reserved first of all.
As soon as the print job is triggered, the system checks just how many pages were actually printed out physically.
If a print job is deleted (manually or after 24h automatically), the reserved amount is released again.
- 110 pages, both sides, were sent
- only 7 doubled-sided pages were printed
- only the 7 double-side pages that were printed out will be charged for

This is due to the settings of the iPad and not the settings of the Webprint Portal.
The iPad has no file directory, which is why it is only possible to retrieve documents via an application.
If no application like Dropbox or polybox is installed, one will need to be installed first of all.
It may also be that the desired application has not yet been released for the Safari browser.
After clicking "Datei auswählen"(select file), in addition to the Fotomediathek (media centre) you will also see the option "Mehr..." (more)
You will now be able to activate the desired application.
You should now be able to upload documents to the Webprint Portal.
If, when sending a print job to the Webprint Portal, the document is not printed or only printed in part,
try printing the same document via a Windows computer, for example from a public computer in the ETH computer rooms,
in Adobe Reader via Card-Stud.
In most cases, the problem is caused by an error in the PDF document, and the Webprint Portal is unable to correctly convert the document into a print job.
If Card-Stud is installed on a computer and the nethz password was changed, the password must also be changed for the locally installed printer.
All devices which have the logo ETH Print Service for Students , the students have the possibility to copy,
scan or print via the Webprint Portal (https://piastudweb01.ethz.ch) as well as via the print server (Server: piastud01.d.ethz.ch Queue: card-stud)
The list contains the locations of all multifunction devices available for the ETH Print Service for Students.
https://ethz.ch/services/en/it-services/catalogue/printing/self-service/printer-locations.html
This service works with the SMB authentication protocol from Windows, which means the username of every user must be available in the Identity Management System of ITS, and the users must also have the correct password.
This is obviously the case for students, employees and long-term guests of the university,.
With certain employer-employee relationships, there is however not quite clear for what all a person is enabled.
The table shows which persons with which ETH relationship the free printing is enabled or with which ETH relationship freepages is made available.
Important: A person can have several ETH relationships with ETH. However, the authorization for printing always applies only to the main relationship.

Service description
The Print Service includes the provision, maintenance and operation of output devices for ETH organisational units.
The range of output devices includes laser printers and multi-function devices (MFDs).
The MFDs are fitted with a trigger station and authentication takes place directly on the device via your personal ETH card or your personal ETH account.
Together with billing via “prepay” and pull printing, we operate redundant solutions for computing labs, libraries or self-service stations in the institutes.
The multi-function devices can only be accessed via the print server piastud01.d.ethz.ch with the queue card-stud using the standard protocols and various computer platforms, and also the Web Upload portal for printing PDF files via the web.
Description
In many computing labs for students, and also in some of the rooms for those about to take their diplomas, multi-function devices have been installed with a trigger station.
The jobs need to be triggered here, after being sent beforehand to the pull printing queue card-stud. These printers are generally set up in pools, with the objective of being able to trigger and print out a job at a device nearby if a printer is overloaded or faulty.
Customer Benefits
The customer can thus make use of a printer with fewer print jobs and/or print out the jobs at a more appropriate time.
Print jobs are kept in the print queue for a minimum of 24 hours before being deleted automatically. This means unnecessary printouts can be avoided, as ideally only those jobs that actually need printing are triggered.
Customer Groups / Cost / Order
This service is available to all ETH members.
