General

To be able to work efficiently and seamlessly from your home, various precautions must be taken. Here we explain briefly how you can do this best.



Redirect Phones

Instructions on how to redirect phones can be found under each phone model.

When forwarding to an external telephone number, an additional "0" must be prefixed. e.g: 0079 123 45 67

Configure Voice-Mail

Configure PC

Owners of managed laptops (e.g. in ZO) may only need to forward the telephone, as the devices are already set up for use in the home office.

Devices in the ETH network are subject to the Use Policy for Information and Communications Technology at ETH Zurich (BOT) and must have all security patches and an up-to-date virus scanner installed.

VPN

A VPN connection is only necessary if access to resources and services is required which can ONLY be accessed within the ETH network. Most applications are normally accessible via the Internet.

  • Baramundi / Jamf / WSUS

Instructions for the installation and configuration of the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client:

For managed computers at ETH Zurich, special VPN settings may apply. Please contact your IT support group if you have any questions. In order to continue to receive all updates and security patches, it is recommended to connect to the ETH network via VPN at least every 2-3 days for about two hours.


 ETH Staff

For the login into https://sslvpn.ethz.ch and the configuration of Cisco AnyConnect use the example given below (please replace the stars*** with your ETH user name and enter your ETH network password )


  • Cisco AnyConnect login


Attention: Linux requires that the client be installed via shell script. This script can be downloaded from the link above. Execute the command with the command: sudo sh ./vpnsetup.sh

Smartphone (iOS, Android)

Cisco AnyConnect can also be downloaded from the App Store or Play Store.

 ETH Students

For the login into https://sslvpn.ethz.ch and the configuration of Cisco AnyConnect use the example given below (please replace the stars*** with your ETH user name and enter your ETH network password )

Email

Webmail access

The mailbox can be accessed directly via web browser.

Outlook for iOS and Android is not supported due to security reasons.



Network drive (NAS)

Access to the NAS requires an active VPN connection (see above). The paths are different for each department, institute or group. If the paths are not known, they can be obtained from the respective ISG:  IT Support Groups in the departments


 Mac OS
  • Go to “Finder" 
  • Go to the "Finder" menu select "Go" and select "Connect to Server.." (or CMD+K)


  • Enter the server address and click "Connect"


  • Enter your ETH user name and ETH password for email (Active Directory) and click on "Connect"


 Windows
  • Open File Explorer from the taskbar or the Start menu, or press the Windows logo key + E.
  • Select This PC from the left pane. Then, on the Computer tab, select Map network drive.


  • In the "Drive" list, select a drive letter. (Any available letter will do.)
    In the "Folder" box, type the corresponding server address
    Check the box "Connect using different credentials"
    Select "Finish"


  • Enter your ETH user name ("d\" in front of it E.g. d\hansmuster) and ETH password for email (Active Directory) and click on "OK"

    Login with another user

    Click on "More choices" and then on "Use a different account"





Microsoft Teams (Collaboration)

In order to support online meetings and work in the home office, Informatikdienste makes Microsoft teams available to all students and employees. Microsoft Teams allows:

  • Online Meetings
  • Dial-in to online meetings by telephone
  • Chat
  • Screen Sharing

 Zoom (Online courses)

Zoom is suitable for online courses and large meetings. Zoom offers the following features:

  • small and large online meetings/courses with up to 300 people
  • Dial-in to online meetings by telephone
  • Screensharing
  • Chat
  • Recording function
  • Pre-recording function incl. provision

 Teams vs. Zoom - when do I use what?

Teams is a "collaboration" tool with audio/video telephony function. We recommend teams for everyday communication in smaller working teams.

Zoom is a "video conferencing" tool with a few collaboration features. We recommend Zoom for larger and/or formal meetings, as well as for online courses.
