General terms
- Listed here are details extracted from standardized policies and copyright agreements that are freely available online. However, we do not assume any liability for this information and generally recommend checking the publishing contracts again with regard to copyrights.
- In case you have agreed to deviating terms with the publisher please check your copyright agreement and follow the respective terms. To obtain permission to use a different version, shorten the embargo period, or the like, contact the publisher. Most publishers handle permissions with help of the RightsLink service by the Copyright Clearance Center.
- Some (not all) publishers have different policies for self-archiving and re-use depending on the publication type: journal article or book chapter. While this list focuses on policies that cover journal articles some policies for book chapters are also included. Please check carefully whether the described policy applies to your type of contribution.
- You might be able find information about self-archiving guidelines of publishers not included in the list in the Open Policy Finder
- If your article was published open access under a Creative Commons Licence, there are a wider re-use options.
- For an explanation of the terms preprint, AAM etc. go to the page Self-archiving.
- Prior publication regulation: Many academic publishers nowadays accept articles for publication, even if they have already been published online as part of an open access dissertation. Similar to how preprints are treated, online disssertations often also do not count as "prior publication" according to many publihers's policies. see also: Discussion document on best practice for issues around theses publishing (by the Commitee on Publication Ethics)
Referencing (to be) published parts in a cumulative thesis
If doctoral students use a published or submitted article in their cumulative thesis, documentation is required regarding where this article was or will be published. This documentation must adhere to the standards of academic referencing. You must always give a proper, full citation and use the DOI to link to the published version of your paper used in the cumulative thesis. If the article was published open access under a Creative Commons license, you should also add a link to the respective license. Additionally, we recommend adding the current publication status of each of your papers (e.g., published, accepted, under review, in preparation). References are usually added at the beginning of the respective chapter the paper is used in, either in the main text or in a footnote.
Examples:
- This chapter is published as: Prescott, A. B., & Pelletier, J. D. (2025). Climate‐Driven Changes to Suspended‐Sediment Yields by the End of the Century. Earth’s Future, 13(9). https://doi.org/10.1029/2025ef006125 under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
- This chapter is accepted for publication in "Nature Communications"
- This chapter is submitted to "IEEE Access"
- This chapter is in preparation for submission to "Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres"
- This chapter is in preparation for submission to a scientific journal
If an additional description of the doctoral student's contribution to the research and authorship of an article is needed for co-authored outputs and is not already included in the article's text, the Contributor Role Taxonomy (CRediT) (https://credit.niso.org/) can be used to describe the key types of contribution typically made to the production and publication of research outputs, such as research articles.
Publishers' policies on cumulative doctoral theses
The following table gives an overview of the most important publisher's policies on integrating content into doctoral theses.
Provision of ETH Zurich
According to the valid Doctoral Regulations and the Implementation Regulations of ETH Zurich, the use of the published article version (publisher's version pdf) is not allowed.
