ETH Library provides researchers from ETH Zurich with the possibility to publish open access either free of charge or at a reduced price.

This video briefly explains the general procedure.

Table of Content

Good to know

  • Eligibility criteria for the funding of Open Access articles

  • The publication model is important for Article Processing Charge (APC) funding (see FAQs):
    • Gold journal: Primary publication of academic articles via an open-access publisher or in a pure Open Access journal of a conventional publisher (cf. DOAJ). The APC is funded either by the ETH Library or, in the case of SNSF-funded projects, by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). For SNSF-funded articles in gold journals, please consult SNSF-funded articles: APC funding process
    • Hybrid journal: Hybrid journals are subscription journals that allow authors to make individual articles freely accessible by paying an APC. Articles in hybrid journals are only financially supported by the ETH Library if there is an agreement with the publisher.
  • The ETH Library has agreements with various publishers to cover costs and supports non-APC-based journals in which researchers can publish free of charge.

Full Article Processing Charge funding for publishers with an agreement

Please check the list below to see whether the ETH Library has an agreement with the publisher with whom you publish to cover the costs. The procedure for these publishers is described in the respective accordion elements below, please click on the elements to open them. As a rule, you as an author will not receive an invoice from these publishers, but the ETH Library will automatically finance the open access fees. Please note the funding criteria.

Phishing attempt with fake Frontiers invoices

There are currently regular attempts to defraud you with fake APC invoices that appear to come from the publisher Frontiers. The fake invoices can be recognized by the following features:

  • It is an invoice or payment reminder for an article you have recently published with Frontiers
  • The invoice contains a request for payment to the account of a private individual

If you receive such an invoice, do not pay it under any circumstances, but block the sender and forward the mail as an attachement to phishing@ethz.ch
If you are not sure whether you have received a legitimate or a fake invoice, please contact e-publishing@library.ethz.ch by email.

The national negotiations between swissuniversities and Wiley have not yet resulted in an agreement, which will lead to a situation without a contract from January 2025.

From January 2025, publication in hybrid journals will temporarily be possible only in closed access. The ETH Library will not finance the Open Access fees for hybrid journals during the contract-free period. However, the ETH Library is committed to converting all articles accepted in 2025 to open access publications retroactively upon conclusion of a contract. The ETH-Library recommends that ETH members do not fund hybrid articles from their own resources during the no-contract period. Alternatively, authors are encouraged to republish the accepted version of their manuscript free of charge in the Research Collection.
