Third party funding

  • ETH Library will only cover publication costs if no other funding (e.g. SNSF, EU Grants) is available. Applicants undertake to provide this information truthfully when when applying for funding via the form "Application for open-access publication fees" and to disclose any funder information when submitting their manuscript to a publisher.

Affiliation with ETH Zurich

  • The corresponding (and submitting) author of the article must be a member of ETH Zurich.
  • ETH Zurich members are defined as employees and lecturers as well as doctoral students at ETH Zurich. Special conditions apply to emeritus professors, students and academic guests, see below.

  • The author must have conducted significant parts of the research work at ETH Zurich (cf. Integrity Guidelines Art.18: "When research papers are published, ETH Zurich is indicated as an affiliation if the author was a member of ETH Zurich during the conductance of significant parts of the research work.").
  • The affiliation details in the article must clearly indicate the author's affiliation to ETH Zurich. Please follow the guidelines of Corporate Communications.
  • An institutional ETH Zurich e-mail address (jane.doe@inst.ethz.ch) has to be used when submitting articles.
  • Publications that were written at ETH Zurich, but submitted after the corresponding author has left, are generally eligible for funding. In this case, an active member of ETH Zurich (e.g. the author's former supervisor) must confirm the origin of the publication at ETH Zurich.
  • For emeritus professors and retired adjunct professors, the article fees are covered for a maximum of 2 years after retirement. Decisive is the date of submission.
  • APCs for articles by students at the Master's level will only be financed if the article was written with co-authors from ETH Zurich or if a supervisor confirms that significant parts of the research work were carried out at ETH Zurich as part of the student's education.

  • APCs for articles by academic guests and guest professors can be covered if the underlying research was conducted at ETH Zurich and the guest publishes the article with his/her ETH affiliation.

Articles at publishers with agreement

  • ETH Library covers article fees with publishers listed on the APC Funding website.
  • Articles funded under an OA agreement (see APC funding) must be submitted via the corresponding publisher workflow.
  • Retrospective choice of OA option for hybrid journals with agreement: Articles funded under an OA agreement (see APC funding) may only be made OA retrospectively if the respective publisher allows this.

Articles at publishers without agreement (individual invoices via form)

  • For articles with publishers or journals that are not included in the list of "publishers with agreement", the fee can be applied for via the form "Application for open-access publication fees".
  • This funding scheme only covers articles in Gold OA journals, i.e. articles in hybrid journals are not funded.
  • If the invoice has already been paid by the authors, it can be reimbursed up to six months after the initial publication of an article at the latest.
  • Applications for this funding scheme will be rejected, if they are for articles that could be funded through an institutional Gold open-access agreement (see APC Funding).
  • Gold Open Access journals must apply rigorous quality assurance procedures ("peer review") that are recognized in the respective subject in order to be eligible for Open Access fees. Indexing in the DOAJ (Directory of Open-Access Journals) is desirable.

Fee types

  • Only Open Access publishing fees are covered. Additional costs charged by the publishers (special fee for licenses, front cover charges, additional page charges, color charges, etc.) are not covered.

Access and licences

  • The ETH Library recommends that funded publications are generally published under a Creative Commons (CC) license (or equivalent) that is as free as possible (e.g. CC BY). Ultimately, the choice of license is up to the author and also depends on the offer of the respective publishing house.
  • According to the Open Access Policy of ETH Zurich, publications funded by the ETH Library must be self-archived on the Research Collection.

Responsibility

  • The members of the E-Publishing Group make the decision on funding in each individual case.
