APC funding in EU projects

If your project was funded under Horizon 2020, APCs for articles in gold open access journals as well as in hybrid journals must be paid from the project budget.

Only in the following cases, authors from ETH Zurich can request APC funding via ETH Library:

• An article from a project is published after the project has already ended and the project budget is already closed
• An article is published with one of the following publishers, where special agreements exist which include all EU-funded articles: AMS, ASME, CUP, Elsevier, IOP, Karger, Microbiology Society, Portland Press, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley.

It is mandatory that all open access publications costs within an EU project are budgeted and claimed accordingly.

Please note that under Horizon Europe only APCs in gold open access journals are eligible for reimbursement.

We therefore recommend that you estimate the amount of articles that will be published in gold open access journals during the project phase and multiply it with CHF 2'400 (average cost of an article in a gold open access journal).

When calculating the approximate total APC budget, the wide range of publication fees should also be taken into account, which can vary from 450 EUR (International Journal of Management and Economics) up to 8900 USD (Cell Genomics) and beyond. Certain APCs can be found in the DOAJ or on journal's websites, and sometimes you may have to refer directly to the journal editors.

If your project is funded by the European Commission under Horizon Europe, APCs for articles in gold open access journals must be paid from the project budget.

Only in the following cases, authors from ETH Zurich can request APC funding via ETH Library:

• An article resulting from a project is published after the project has already ended and the project budget is already closed
• An article is published in a hybrid journal which is included in one of ETH Library's Read & Publish agreements
• An article is published with one of the following publishers, where special agreements exist which include all EU-funded articles: AMS, ASME, CUP, Elsevier, IOP, Karger, Microbiology Society, Portland Press, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley.

Special procedure when publishing with Copernicus, Frontiers, IEEE, MDPI and PLOS: If you publish with one of these publishers, even if they suggest that the invoice can be covered by ETH Zurich, do not take advantage of this option but request an individual APC invoice to be paid from your project budget.

It is mandatory that all open access publications costs within an EU project are budgeted accordingly.

Please note that under Horizon Europe only APCs in gold open access journals are eligible for reimbursement. Additionally, the SNSF excludes all articles in Special Issues from APC funding. APC invoices must be submitted to the SNSF in advance of payment via ChronosHub; reimbursements of already paid APCs will no longer be processed as of 1 January 2025.

If the Swiss project partner is funded by the SNSF during the non-asscociation of Switzerland to Horizon Europe, the APC funding process for SNSF-funded articles applies.

If the Swiss project partner is funded by the State Secreteriat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) during the non-association of Switzerland to Horizon Europe, APCs for articles in gold open access journals must be paid from the project budget.

Only in the following cases, authors from ETH Zurich can request APC funding via ETH Library:

• An article resulting from a project is published after the project has already ended and the project budget is already closed
• An article is published in a hybrid journal which is in included in one of ETH Library's Read & Publish agreements
• An article is published with one of the following publishers, where special agreements exist which include all EU-funded articles: AMS, ASME, CUP, Elsevier, IOP, Karger, Microbiology Society, Portland Press, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley.
