Simple Search

Word Stem Search / Stemming

Each search is automatically executed as a word stem search. For example, a search for "climate" will also return results for "climate change."

What results are shown when searching with multiple terms?

  • For two search terms, both must appear in the result.
  • For three to five search terms, all but one must appear.
  • For six or more search terms, 75% of all terms must appear.

Sorting of the Results List

The results are sorted by relevance. The ranking is determined by:

  • In which metadata field the search term appears
  • Whether the term is found in the full text
  • For multiple terms: Results where the terms appear close together are ranked higher.

Exact Search / Expert Search

Precise search within individual fields:

Syntax: fieldname:content
Example: dc.subject:climate

Phrase search:

To search for exact word groups, place them in quotation marks.
Example: "climate change in Switzerland"

Search for fields with any content:

To find all entries where a field contains any content:
Example: dc.subject:*

Search for empty fields:

To find entries where a field is empty:
Syntax: -fieldname:*
Example: -dc.date.issued:* shows all entries without a publication date

Combining fields:

Using parentheses and the Boolean operators AND or NOT, you can combine fields when searching – even in fields that are not filters.
Example: (dc.subject:climate AND dc.language:de)

Search by Organizational Units (Leitzahlen)

We recommend starting via the navigation menu on the homepage. Select "Browse," then "by organizational unit."

  • Search for the desired organizational unit.

  • Select the checkbox of the desired organizational unit.
  • Click on “Search.”

You can also select multiple organizational units at once. The results list will include all associated publications – including those from sub-units.

To search for a specific unit, you can enter its name or classification number in the “Filter” field.

General Remark: Due to software updates, the design of the user interface can change and the screenshots shown above may not correspond to the actual appearance. But the process and the functionalities remain the same.
