Description
802.1X is a network security protocol that increases the security of a network by requiring authentication before granting access, thus preventing unauthorized access to the network.
If you wish to connect a computer not managed by IT Services to ETH with a network cable, you must follow the instructions below.
Windows
- Enter "Services" in the Windows search and press the Enter key.
Right-click on the "Wired AutoConfig" service.
Click on "Properties".
Select "Automatic" as the start type if the service is to be started after every restart. Bear in mind that this may not always be desirable - for example, if you also want to use other cable network connections. It is therefore only important that the service has been started, the start type plays a subordinate role.
Click on "Start".
Click on "OK".
The Services window can be closed.
Click (right-click) on the network connection icon in the taskbar and then on "Network and Internet settings".
Select "Advanced network settings".
- Click on "Ethernet" and then click on "Edit" under "Further adapter options".
- Now go to the "Authentication" tab.
Please note that this is only displayed if the service mentioned above has been started.
Now change the settings according to the screenshot.
Click on the "Advanced" button
Check the "Specify authentication mode" box.
Select "User authentication" from the drop-down menu.
Click on "Replace credentials".
A message appears asking you to enter additional information (access data).
(e.g. ethbenutzername@staff-net.ethz.ch and the Radius password)
Please note that print screens may vary depending on the version and update of your operating system.
Mac OS
- After you have connected the network cable to your Mac computer, you will be prompted to enter a user name and password.
A message will appear asking you to enter your access data.
(e.g. ethbenutzername@staff-net.ethz.ch and the Radius password) - Once you have successfully entered your access data, the certificate check is displayed.
Confirm this with Fortharen. You should now be connected to the ETH network.
Linux (KDE)
Go to the system preferences.
Select the existing "Ethernet adapter". If a new Ethernet connection is created in order to be able to separate these settings cleanly from all others, then the following steps are the same.
Select "Connections" and then click on "Ethernet adapter" and then select the "802.1x" tab.
Check the "Use 802.1x security for the connection" box.
Enter your ETH user name and password
(e.g. ethbenutzername@staff-net.ethz.ch and the Radius password)
Save Passwords
Everyone must decide for themselves how the password is saved! The following options are available:
* Save password for all users (unencrypted)
* this should **NOT** be done (unless it is a completely encrypted file system)
* Save password for this user only (encrypted)
* Ask for this password every time
The "IPv4" settings can be left as they are.
