Second ITRF2020 Update (ITRF2020-u2024) report and discussion

Adoption of ITRF2020-u223 by the ACs

1) ITRF2020-u2023: ACs are asked to prepare for adoption of this solution so that it can be adopted at short notice. The IVS will wait for guidelines from the IERS (decisions expected at EGU).

2) ITRF2020-u2024: the solution is available at BKG data servers. ACs are encouraged to perform comparisons/provide feedback

3) Future idea: several ACs would be ready to do a complete re-processing within then next 18 months. This could be done in combination with the next ITRF update (even though Zuheir would only request 1 extra year, IVS could provide the whole history).

BKG VLBI Group Update

IVS-CC report, Second ITRF2020 Update, recommendations

1) ACs are asked to ensure consistent and up-to-date station metadata

2) Issues with incomplete databases for analysis. Automatic check in CDDIS suggested but difficult to implement. Maybe the new status labels proposed by Chris Dieck would help.

3) Discrepancy between C04 and bulletin A needs investigation

9:35Lucia McCallum

WG 7 Satellite observations report and discussion

1) everyone agrees that vgosDB should be used for satellite observations

2) Lucia will send out emails to ACs with VLBI software supporting satellite observations to obtain more details

9:50Karine le Bail

WG 9 Scale report and discussion

Discontinuity file: suggestion to use github for hosting and DOI for referencing. ACo website can then link to it.

Maintain station-specific information and documentation

  • Axis offsets, gravitational deformation, discontinuities, non-linear events, SEFD, etc.

see presentation by Benedikt above

1) ACo will identify persons to take responsibility of maintaining individual files

  • BKG offered to be responsible for the discontinuity file
  • Network Coordinator offered support concerning information about stations

2) SEFD files/scheduling catalogs should be handled separately (not related to analysis)

Source structure in VLBI/VGOS analysis

Discussion revealed that some bandpass issues might be caused by DBBC2

10:45Coffee break

11:15Patrick Charlot

VGOS optimizations for geodesy/astrometry/astronomy

1) While there were some concerns that the comparisons did not only reflect the impact of the new source-centric scheduling strategy, it was emphasized that the value lies in having real data comparisons that capture the current state of VGOS scheduling.

2) VGOS CRF important, but weakness in the South could be an issue for including it in ICRF4

11:30Christopher Dieck (online)

Station naming inconsistencies & other vgosDB issues

Issues with missing/inconsistent files/databases

    • e.g., spoolfiles, v4 wrappers, SINEX, …
    • automatic check in ingest system of CDDIS?

1) Suggested timeline approved, no objections from ACs

2) ACs agreed to fix station names in their software/files

3) New labels for status field: yes, but more descriptive names suggested: Canceled → Not_Obs, failed → Not_Anal. Instead of date → Released. Additional label Aborted suggested (when it is known beforehand that a session cannot be observed)

4) Time range for Not_Cor label for Intensives: try 14 days first

11:50Benedikt Soja/Oleg Titov

Impact of estimating baseline clock offsets

1) Poll revealed that most but not all ACs estimate baseline clock offsets (at least for certain sessions)

2) Explanation for cause could be different dropped channels for different baselines

12:10Lucia McCallum

ACs are invited to test the new model and report back (see table on the last slides). Note the azimuth dependency - suggestions how to practically implement these (file format, etc.) are welcome

12:20Simone Bernhart

Correlate Intensive sessions with the long baseline missing?

Yes, it can be useful when stacking multiple sessions in a combination

12:25Rüdiger Haas

Analysis of VGOS sessions

ACs are encouraged to experiment with higher temporal resolutions for atmospheric parameters when analyzing VGOS sessions

AOB/buffer time

1) vgosDB: documentation should be finalized → ACo to contact Goddard group

2) Invar wire measurements are available at Wettzell that could replace thermal deformation models. ACs are encouraged to investigate this data and find a way to incorporate it in VLBI analysis.
