Scope
RDSnx offers two ways of interacting with a remote session. One is the traditional Remote Desktop Session which we call full desktop experience and the other is a so called Remote App. See below for a detailed explanation.
Remote Apps
What is a Remote App?
A Remote App enables you to make programs that are accessed remotely through Remote Desktop Services appear as if they are running on your local computer. Instead of being presented a desktop environment on a Remote Desktop server, the Remote App program is integrated with your local computers desktop.
Matlab running as a remote app on macOS
Use Cases
If you prefer to work with a seamless app instead of having to login to a desktop and start the app from there, a RemoteApp is the way to go. Also some apps, like Matlab, run on dedicated systems which are only accessible via RemoteApp.
Getting a new Remote App published
If you want a specific program published as a remote app, please get in touch with your local IT support group.
Accessing Local Drives
It is possible to access the local "home directory" on your computer when using a Remote App.
macOS
In the sidebar on the left your will see "home" followed by your local compute name. This will list all folders in your Mac home directory. Simply select the document your would like to open.
Note: Opening large files or running a data analysis via this method is not recommended for reliability and performance reasons.
Windows
In the sidebar on the left your will see a "Z" drive followed by your local compute name. This will list all folders in your local Windows home directory. Simply select the document your would like to open.
Note: Opening large files or running a data analysis via this method is not recommended for reliability and performance reasons.
Disconnecting and Reconnecting
macOS
In the Remote Desktop Client Connection Center window, right click on the name of the feed and click on disconnect. To reconnect just start the remote app again.
Windows
Right-click on the computer icon in the lower right corner of your screen.
Select "disconnect from RDS Applications" to reconnect to the same applications later.
Reopen the same application again from your Remote App feed or Start Menu later and it will reconnect you
Full Desktop Experience
What is a full desktop experience?
As you know it, login to a server and get a full desktop environment.
Use Cases
If you need a full desktop or if the program you need is not available as a remote app. Most people prefer to work like this
How to to access
